ABOUT

History The concept for the East Timor Zoo began in April of 2009 during a business program in Bali with a group of international entrepreneurs committed to bringing positive social change through business leadership. Gabriel Flores was participating on the programme and travelling with his partner Marcel McKinley, a zookeeper at the ZSL London Zoo. Whilst on the programme, we met an inspiring and enterprising couple, Toni & Gaylene Favaro, that had been successful in their business in Australia and had moved to Timor-Leste (East Timor is the informal name) to make a difference in the new & developing country. Because of the leadership role they serve in the business community, they work closely with the government to fulfill on its vision for the future. Marcel is passionate about animals and works for the ZSL London Zoo. Originally from Hungary, Marcel had planned to start a new zoo in his home country that focused on conservation and educated the public by displaying wildlife...

Journal – 17 Nov 2010 – Day 1 in Timor-Leste

Our Merpati flight to Dili has been cancelled! The announcement over the intercom in Denpasar Airport in Bali is explaining the cancellation of the flight. It is all a bit chaotic – even the Merpati staff are a little confused as to what to do. Eventually the staff organise for us to be bussed to a local hotel for the night and then back to the airport the tomorrow morning to catch our flight to Dili.
